WGCC Networking Circles
INVITATION: April 23 & 30, 2024

Gender Confidence Gap or Self-Promotion Gap or Structural Inequality? Empowering Yourself and Your Team No Matter the Answer!

WGCC Networking Circles are small, informal groups designed to enable the discussion of a topic of interest to members with a focus on legal professionalism and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Circles are also a way to connect with other members of WGCC to expand your network and support system as you navigate professional challenges faced by executives. BONUS: Circles are submitted for CPD credit in Ontario, and more information to follow.

Date and Time: WGCC Networking Circles are 60 minutes long and are scheduled as follows:

How to Sign up:

  • Send an email to info@womengc.ca indicating which circle you wish to attend.
  • Sign up early to avoid disappointment – but no later than 12:00 EDT on Wednesday April 17th for Circle 1 and 12:00 EDT on Wednesday April 24th for Circle 2. We want to ensure you receive the materials for the Circles in advance and your Circle Lead can send you the calendar invite.
  • Ensure to “HOLD” the time/date in your calendar.
  • In advance of your Circle, you will receive a calendar invitation and email from your WGCC Circle Lead with Circle Pre-reads & materials for connecting on the day of your chosen circle.
  • Please note that a Circle may be cancelled if interest is low (which has NEVER happened yet).
  • If you miss the above deadlines, please send an email to info@womengc.ca for possible options.

Directions for Attendees:

  • Chatham House Rules apply to all Networking Circles.
  • Accept the calendar invitation from your WGCC Networking Circle Lead with the Circle details (Zoom/Teams) (you will get it soon, if you have not already received it).
  • Please review the Circle Material below – you do not have to review any/all of the material as it follows the same theme. Feel free to browse until you find something of interest. We encourage you to STILL ATTEND a Circle, even if you do not have time to review any of the materials as you will gain valuable insights from the discussion.
  • On the day of the Circle, please sign in using the invitation from your Circle Lead and turn on your camera – your Circle Lead will start the discussion.
Circle TopicGender Confidence Gap or Self-Promotion Gap or Structural Inequality? Empowering Yourself and Your Team No Matter the Answer!

We have all read about the gender confidence gap as part of the explanation for women’s lower wages and relative lag behind men in leadership positions in the workplace. Recent research has suggested that the confidence gap between men and women may instead be a gap in self-promotion, and that there are no consistent gender differences in self-reported self-confidence. Another article suggests that the differences are reflective of structural inequalities. Finding ways to address these concerns is crucial for creating a work environment that values diversity and equity and where women can succeed to their full potential. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on this topic. We will also discuss ways to address these matters no matter what you believe is the issue to solve.

    Sub-Topics:

    • Have you seen or experienced the gender confidence gap?
    • How do your build your “courage” muscle? (for example, taking on stretch assignments or encouraging a team member to do so)
    • How do you encourage self-promotion on your team?
    • How do you feel that structural inequality may also be at play?
    • How have you addressed these issues personally and on your team?
    • What strategies did you find worked better than others?
    • How can DEI principles be applied to these issues?
