Letter from the President

March 8, 2019

Dear WGCC Members,

On this International Women’s Day, I write to introduce myself as your new President of WGCC for 2019 – 2021.

I want to take a moment to recognize the amazing things that can be achieved when women support other women.  This past year we have seen time and time again how the women of WGCC – our formidable, inspiring, inclusive and lively group of women – have worked together to positively and materially impact our profession, peers, mentees, and selves from coast to coast. It has been a pleasure to be part of WGCC’s initiatives over the past years and I look forward to another exciting year.

As our numbers continue to swell at WGCC, we are reminded of the scope and power of senior women leaders in law and business. As we develop authentic and trusted relationships with peers, we are inspired to draw from example and lead with passion.  As we continue to learn through engagement with topics such as leadership development, board-readiness, effective mentoring, and personal balance, we are able to build and encourage the current and future women in-house leaders of our profession.  It is a privilege to be part of this work, and truly an honour to be able to support the next generation of women in general counsel roles in Canada.

In an effort to continue this work and to give back to our broader community, I am also pleased to announce that WGCC will, in the fall of 2019, begin awarding an annual student scholarship for the benefit of eligible law students who are able to demonstrate a contribution and commitment to organizations and causes that align with the mission and vision of WGCC.  Further information will be provided about this scholarship in the weeks ahead.

I ask you to take this day to reflect on your successes, both professional and personal. Consider the power we have as women to lift one another up and to change the world. In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt: “For our own success to be real, it must contribute to the success of others.” To this group of committed women, thank you for the inspirational work you do every day.

Sincerely,

Elspeth Hagan

President, WGCC
